Mark Evans creates images by cutting them with a knife into huge pieces of leather. The author himself is extremely unpretentious about his skill: “There is no art more primitive than engraving animal skins with a large knife. I am not creating something "pseudo-intellectual", I am creating art. " And so it is: no postmodern melancholy, no childish problems. Only a man with a knife, a piece of leather and art.
The biography of Mark, presented on his official website, is quite amusing. So, his distant, distant ancestor was a caveman, and Mark himself grew up among a pack of wolves in the arctic deserts. His body, frozen in ice, was found by a group of geologists. Thawed and awake, Evans is now trying to adapt to the conditions of life in the 21st century. However, the primary instincts made themselves felt, and Mark constantly scratched out images on pieces of skin with the help of sharp stones, shards of glass and other hard and sharp objects. But one day a knife fell into his hands …
Since then, the knife has become the only tool in the hands of Mark Evans. When creating images, its blade strips off the top layer of leather in the right places in order to expose the suede underneath. This painstaking work takes days, weeks, months … Slowly but surely, the image is born.
In fact, Mark is from Wales, and his grandfather gave him the knife at the age of seven. The author chose leather as a material for many reasons. She is both beautiful and practical at the same time. People have used leather since ancient times. It is impermeable to water, easy to clean, and in addition, in the world of plastics and synthetics, leather remains a natural material.
The technique with which images are created can be called unique, since Mark invented it himself, learning everything from his own experience and mistakes, and only he owns this technique - the only person in the world. Evans' work became known to the general public in 2008.
