From October 24 to April 29 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), located in New York, the painting "The Scream" by the expressionist artist from Norway Edvard Munch will be presented to the general public. The unknown owner of the painting will exhibit it for the first time for public display.
For several decades, the canvas has never been exhibited in the halls of New York as it was in a private collection. Art critics consider him one of the most recognizable artistic images of painting during the 20th century.
According to the director of the museum, the canvas will be placed on the fifth floor in the first gallery. Next to it will be exhibited, created in the same period, Munch's engravings. In connection with the great interest in the picture from the thieves, unprecedented high security measures will be taken.
The Scream went down in the history of painting as the most expensive lot, which set a record for an auction dedicated to modernism and impressionism, as well as a masterpiece of expressionism. In May this year, the painting was purchased at Sotheby's for $ 120 million.
The name of the person who acquired the painting is still unknown. Most experts believe that Leon Black's buyer is an American art collector and financier. By the way, he is also a member of the MoMA Board of Trustees. However, neither the administration of Sotheby's nor the director of the museum disclose the name of the owner of the painting.
When the painting was put up for auction in London in May, almost 8,000 people looked at it in five days. After her arrival in New York, only Sotheby's clients had the opportunity to see her.
Let's remind that "Scream" is one of the 4 famous works of the series. Munch painted four canvases on the same subject between 1893 and 1910. Three works are kept in the walls of Norwegian museums. Several attempts were made to steal them. Nevertheless, after the abduction, the paintings were found for two years.
The canvas exhibited in the fall in New York is made in pastels. It is the most colorful and vibrant of the entire series. In addition, on the frame of this particular picture, the artist wrote a line from his diary, explaining what exactly pushed him to create the picture.
