The monument is equal in height to a 31-storey building, and its weight is about 600 tons. It will be the tallest structure on the coast of Puerto Rico and will be visible from both land and sea miles away.
After the Columbus monument was donated by the Moscow mayor's office to a resort center in Marbella in Spain in the mid-90s, Tsereteli presented it with an analogue of the United States. The monument was transported across the ocean, but the five largest cities on the east coast of the United States refused to install the monument on their territory. As a result, the American government chose Puerto Rico to erect the monument.
As already reported, the installation of the monument causes violent protests among the population. Locals believe that the monument, with its unattractive appearance and gigantic size, will not only spoil the appearance of the coast, but also frighten off tourists. In addition, according to local residents, it would be more rational to invest $ 20 million in projects for the development of the municipality's economy and in the development of tourism.
The statue of Columbus is already the sixth monument made by a Russian sculptor for the American continent. Before Columbus, a statue of Prometheus was made, installed in New York in front of the University of Fine Arts, a composition "Good triumphs over evil" created from Soviet SS-20 missiles and American Pershing, a monument to victims of terrorism "Tear of Sorrow".
