Jaume Plensa has been creating public projects around the world, but one of his most popular, striking and attention-grabbing works is a huge sculpture of a man made entirely of letters!
A giant sculpture called Nomade (2007) looks like a man sitting with his arms around his knees and looking out at the sea. The sculpture is eight meters high and the material it is made of is white painted stainless steel. But the unusualness of Jaume Plensa's work lies primarily in the fact that every detail of the sculpture is a letter of the Latin alphabet!
Jaume Plensa's works are always permeated with light and necessarily involve interaction with the viewer. How does a steel man interact with people? Very simple and very interesting. Everyone who wishes, along with admiring the sculpture from afar, can just as well study it from the inside, enter the openwork environment of letters letting in the sun's rays, and plunge into the world of knowledge and light. “When someone enters, he fills the sculpture with his soul. My work is not completed while it is empty inside,”the author says.
Why exactly letters? Plensa suggests that language, spoken or written, serves not only to carry out simple communication, but can also be represented as a certain envelope, in which the energy and reasons for our existence are hidden. Nomade demonstrates to us Jaume Plensa's continuing interest in human perception of the world around us and in ideas expressed in writing.
Jaume Plensa is a contemporary Spanish painter and sculptor. He was born in 1955 in Barcelona, and now the name of the master is known all over the world. Plensa has lived in Germany, Belgium, Great Britain and France. The author's works have been shown in galleries in Europe, the USA and Japan.
