From childhood, we were taught to treat books with care and respect - after all, good books were in short supply in the Soviet Union. Therefore, many still do not raise their hand to spoil the printed volume. But everything is completely different with this matter in America and the countries of Europe. There are many artists doing book carvings … One of them - Guy Larameecreating simply amazing work!
On the site Kulturologia. Ru we have repeatedly told about artists who create new works of art from old books with a knife. Examples include the work of Kylie Stillman and Brian Dettmer. The "colleague" of these authors is the Canadian composer, writer and artist Guy Laramie. After all, he also "spoils" books, or rather, makes unusual sculptures out of them.
As a material for his work, Larami uses old encyclopedias and reference books, which by now have lost their relevance. He puts them in piles, holds them together, and then, with the help of a knife and other cutting objects, gives them a new shape.
For example, he carves from this printed matter a small copy of a famous Buddhist monastery carved into a rock in Asia, a cave temple in the Jordanian complex of Petra, or a traditional Japanese-style rock garden (created from books in Japanese). But best of all, Guy Laramie manages to reproduce nature, its natural beauty.
Among the works of this author are many book sculptures depicting rocks and canyons, mountain ranges and peaks. Moreover, this is done so talentedly and naturally that a person who looks at these works for the first time may get the opinion that he sees real natural landscapes, and not a copy of them, cut out in the old "yellow pages".
