If color, brightness and positive emotions are not enough for you, be sure to check out the works of a Korean author. Choi Jeong Hwa … Made from everyday objects, his installations simply radiate fun and positivity, although they touch on rather serious topics.
Balloons, laundry baskets, wash basins and kitchen bowls are used … Bright plastic makes funny and pleasing installations, but their meaning is not so light-hearted. Choi Jong Hwa draws parallels between his works and wildlife: according to the author, a person continues to destroy all living things so thoughtlessly and persistently that the hour is not far off when, instead of flowers and trees, only such plastic structures will surround us.
In contemporary art, there are many works on this topic, but the works of the Korean author are distinguished primarily by the fact that they do not contain depressive moods, apocalyptic paintings and gloomy metaphors, which are so fond of representatives of today's art scene.
One of the most prominent representatives of pop art in his country, the author is also known as a designer and architect. Plastic is one of the main, but far from the only material that Choi Jong Hwa works with. He also uses videos, food, lamps, wires, kitsch Korean artifacts and other items in his work.
Choi Jong Hwa, 49, was born and lives in Seoul and graduated from Hong Ik University. The author took part in the 51st Venice Biennale, Liverpool Biennale (2004), Gwangju Biennale (2002 and 2006). Exhibitions of his works were held at the Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) and the Pompidou Center (Paris).
