For the Finnish art event IHME2009, held in Helsinki, a famous British sculptor Anthony Gormley (Antony Gormley) did not create new works or show anything old. He acted much simpler and more original: he brought a huge piece of clay to the exhibition pavilion, and the audience themselves turned it into works of art.
So, specially for this event, called "Clay and the Collective Body", an inflatable pavilion was built in one of the parks in the center of Helsinki. The first three days nothing special happened in it: visitors could see only a clay cube measuring 4x4x4 meters and weighing 160 tons. The second phase of Gormley's project lasted ten days and consisted of the following: everyone could participate in the creation of sculptures from this piece of clay. Moreover, the subject matter and size of the works could be absolutely any, people could work both in groups and alone.
In just ten days, 1,300 residents and guests of the Finnish capital were able to try themselves as sculptors, through whose efforts the clay cube turned into many sculptures. Of course, these works by themselves do not pretend to be works of art, but in the project "Clay and the Collective Body" this is not the main thing. The main thing here is the unification of completely different people who do not know each other for joint creativity. Participants of different ages, nationalities and social statuses enthusiastically worked side by side, becoming one team, forgetting about all the contradictions and creating beauty.
Finally, the final stage of the work is the demonstration of the results of ten days of work of the ephemeral collective. Four thousand spectators visited the pavilion in four days.
