Archaeologists argue that the best idea of the life of already non-existent peoples is given by excavation of landfills on the outskirts of ancient cities. And the best idea of the life of modern people, according to the Malaysian artist Roslisham ismailknown by his creative pseudonym Is, gives content their refrigerators โฆ This is what he is dedicated to. installation at the 2011 Singapore Biennale.
And indeed, there is quite clear logic in the Ise idea. One has only to look at the contents of the refrigerator at home in each of us to make a rough portrait of our preferences, our financial wealth and food traditions. And this gives a lot of information about us.
The installation, created by Roslisham Ismail for the 2011 Singapore Biennale, features six refrigerators arranged in a circle in the middle of the room where they are located. The contents of each of these refrigerators mimics the contents of the refrigerators of six Singaporean families whom the artist met while preparing this installation.
Moreover, the contents of the refrigerators are constantly changing as the families mentioned use old products and buy new ones. There are also small screens on the refrigerators, on which the shopping process of the members of the families studied within the installation is broadcast. Ise persuaded them to take a camera with them every time they visit supermarkets or grocery stores and film the shopping process, and then transmit this video to the author. He looks at the record, buys the exact same foods and loads them into the refrigerators.
In addition, Ise has hired a special chef who prepares a variety of dishes from the products presented in the refrigerators. And each visitor to the installation can taste something from the menu of the families to whom this installation is dedicated.
Another noteworthy exhibit from the 2011 Singapore Biennale, along with frosty window paintings by Gosia Wlodarczak and dead sculptures by Louie Cordero.
