A pencil is just a tool used to draw, sketch, or jot down notes in the margins. Anyone, yes, but not Dalton Ghetti. This 45-year-old resident of Bridgeport has been turning ordinary pencils into miniature sculptures for 25 years without using a magnifying glass.
We have already talked about the so-called "pencil carving", but in that case, the openwork patterns were created from the wooden part of the pencil. Dalton Getty, on the other hand, is not interested in wood: the slate serves as the material for his sculptures. Among the works of the author you can see a shoe, a church, a bust of Elvis. Not so long ago, Dalton created a series of 26 sculptures, where he carved a letter of the English alphabet on the tip of each pencil.
Dalton Getty is very slow. He does not use any special tools: he only needs a blade, a sewing needle and a very bright light to work. To protect his eyesight, the author works no more than an hour and a half a day. One tiny sculpture can take several months, and it took Dalton 2.5 years to create the already mentioned alphabet. “When I tell people how long it takes me to create sculptures, they just don't believe me,” Getty says. “My patience just amazes people, because nowadays everyone strives to be faster, faster and faster.”
The author began to get involved in carving at the age of 8. He tried to carve figures from the wooden part of a pencil, soap, chalk, but in the end he settled on graphite. According to Dalton, this is the ideal material: it is soft and not as grainy as wood.
Dalton is sure that his sculptures make people stop at least for a few moments, break out of the frantic rhythm of modern life and see beauty in miniature details.
