Very often, the Austrian photographer Laurent Ziegler comes in to look at random dance performances, without even knowing much about the artwork itself. He's just driven by curiosity. After all, chance is the best way to experience surprise from what you see, and to catch on camera the unique moments of frozen movements and flights of professional dancers.
Dance photography is not at all what Austrian Laurent Ziegler planned to do in life. At first, he worked as an editor in a completely non-creative environment. Then, in the late 1990s, he got a job as a photojournalist in a newspaper, and then for the first time he had the opportunity to take photos of dance performances. The photographer was deeply impressed by the sincerity and grace that arose before his eyes, felt that he had found what he was looking for, and to which he had been going all his life - a new territory where edges merge and moments freeze.
First of all, Laurent Ziegler strives to show not the beauty of the male or female body in dance, but to convey the story itself and convey it to the viewer. To take a great photo, it is necessary for the dancer to be completely open, to live the dance itself. There is no yesterday and tomorrow, there is only the present moment that lives and breathes. According to the photographer, this is where art begins to exist and breathe. Such performances happen only once, it will be impossible to repeat and reshoot them. The photographer has only one single chance to fully convey in his works the dynamics of movement that exists only in life. He offers the viewer a picture, his personal vision of what is happening. But the viewer can interpret the photo in his own way, from the point of his vision and understanding.
Laurent Ziegler is sure that in today's world, photography remains a powerful means of conveying information, allowing in his works to tell stories, reach the heart of a person and surprise him, at least for one moment. This is his biggest goal.
